Maybe I should have the quails come to me.
Recently, I had decided to start asking around for a business coach. I realized I needed a business coach after losing my steam about creating a business. I had wanted to get the word out about obedience classes being for humans, not dogs. I thought dogs would be beating down the door to drag their humans to obedience classes.
The squirrel told me the quails could help me find a business coach, but so far the quails weren’t letting me approach them, much less talk to them.
So I started watching the quails. I thought I could learn how to approach them by getting to know them. (This is good for business too, the more you know about your prospects, the easier it will be to approach them so they don’t run away and reject you.)
But then I thought, maybe it would be better yet to have the quails come to me.

“Pretend to be a quail,” I mused. “How would that work?”
Recently, I had decided to start asking around for a business coach. I realized I needed a business coach after losing my steam about creating a business. I had wanted to get the word out about obedience classes being for humans, not dogs. I thought dogs would be beating down the door to drag their humans to obedience classes.
I was trying to talk to Ralph, my outdoor friend. I don’t know what animal he is, I only see his eyes because he lives in the rocks.
Ralph blinked his eyes. “Well, you could start by watching the quails. How do they approach each other?”
I thought about this. “I don’t know. They usually don’t let me get close enough to them.”
Ralph blinked his eyes again. “Then why don’t you try watching them from a distance?”

“What do you mean that might be part of my problem?” I asked Ralph.

Ralph blinked his eyes. “Other animals eat quails. Like dogs. Dogs eat quails. So when you chase after the quails and yell at them, you scare them because they think you might eat them.”
I thought about this. “So what do I do? How do I approach them?”
Ralph blinked his eyes again. “Why don’t you pretend to be a quail. If you were a quail, how would you approach other quails?”

I decided to talk to my friend Ralph about how to talk to the quails.

“The squirrel told me the quails could help, but all they do is run away when I try to talk to them,” I said dejectedly.
Ralph blinked his eyes slowly at me. “That’s because they think you’re going to eat them.”
“But I’m not going to eat them. I eat my dog food. I only want to talk to them.”
Ralph sighed. “But they don’t know that.”
I put my head down. “They should. I keep yelling that at them.”
Ralph blinked again. “And that might be part of the problem.”

Maddie, my pack mate, told me I should have the quails come to me, but how could I do that? What would possibly make the quails come to me?
This was all very frustrating. I think I’ll take a break and chew on one of my tennis balls for awhile.

“You’re wasting your time chasing the quails,” Maddie, my packmate, told me.

We were standing outside and the quails were no where to be found. “If I don’t chase them, how do I get them to answer my question?”
Maddie sniffed the ground. “If you chase them, all they’ll do is run away.”
I put my ears down. I didn’t feel like Maddie was listening to me. “If I don’t chase them, how can I ask my question?”
Maddie wrinkled her nose and started to trot away. “Why don’t you get the quails to come to you?”

“How do I approach the quails?” I asked my friend Ralph.

The little ground squirrel told me the quails might help me find a business coach, so I decided my next step would be to find the quails.
I found them okay but talking to them was another story. They ran off before I could say anything.
“It sounds like you scared them,” Ralph said. Ralph is my outdoor friend. I don’t know what type of animal he is, I can only see his eyes.
“I wasn’t trying to scare them,” I said. “I only wanted to ask a question.”
Ralph slowly blinked his eyes. “Maybe they don’t want to answer questions.”
“But it’s just a little question,” I said.
“I don’t know if that matters,” Ralph said. “A question is a question.”
I put my head down and signed. Why is this so difficult?

I’m taking a break from my normal column this time. I broke not one but TWO teeth. I don’t know how I did it either. One day I noticed my jaw was hurting and I was bleeding on my toys. So I had to go to the vet (yuck) and get both teeth pulled. It really hurt so I’m not doing much except laying around. I can’t even chew my bone properly.
I’ll be back writing as soon as my mouth heals. Michele needs me back helping her so I know I can’t take too much time off!

Although it was easy for me to find the quails, it wasn’t so easy to get them to talk to me.
Recently, I had decided to start asking around for a business coach. I realized I needed a business coach after losing my steam about creating a business. I had wanted to get the word out about obedience classes being for humans, not dogs. I thought dogs would be beating down the door to drag their humans to obedience classes.
The little ground squirrel told me the quails might help me find a business coach, so I decided my next step would be to find the quails.
I found them easily enough but getting them to talk to me was another matter. They like to hang out in the back of the yard in the weeds.
“Hey,” the mother quail squawked when I came running up. She gathered her chicks up and hustled them away, the weeds rustling behind her.
“No, wait,” I called back. “I just have a question.”
“No questions, gotta go,” mother quail said, fluttering her wings as she hurried away.
“It’s about your business coach,” I yelled, but she was already disappearing down the rocks.
I guess I need a better strategy to approach her.

“You don’t really believe that,” scoffed Maddie, my packmate. ” A creature who helps other animals who aspire to do more than just survive from one day to the next. And the quails know about it? I’m not sure which is sillier, that there is such a creature or that only the quails know about it.”
I dropped my eats. “You think the ground squirrel was lying to me?”
Maddie sighed and sat down. “Not intentionally. But maybe it wanted you to go away. Or maybe it was mistaken. Quails? Come on.”
I shook myself and stood up. “Well, it’s worth a shot. It won’t hurt to find one and ask.”
